Abstract
As the economies of South and Southeast Asia continue to grow rapidly, the demand for energy is expected to rise significantly. No country in the region is entirely self-reliant or self-sufficient in meeting its electricity needs, making energy security a pressing concern. Strengthening power trade and energy co-operation amongst countries in the region can help bridge the supply–demand gap and enhance overall energy security.
A key enabler of cross-border power trade is efficient grid connectivity. In 2018, India launched the One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) initiative, which seeks to connect India with Southeast Asia and facilitate greater electricity exchange. While there are considerable challenges – such as regulatory differences, infrastructure gaps, and geopolitical complexities – regional grid integration between India and Southeast Asia holds significant potential. It could unlock new opportunities for investment, technology transfer, and job creation across the region.
