ERIA Organizes The Final Workshop of SSN in East Asia

The workshop was held on 20 January 2014, at Borobudur Hotel Jakarta with 7 Working Group (WG) members from four countries.

namely: Prof. Jin Feng, Professor of Economics, School of Economics, Fudan University, China, Dr. Qin Chen, Junior Researcher, School of Economics, Fudan University, China, Prof. Mukul Asher, Professorial Fellow, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, Singapore, Ms. Yutika Vora, Consultant, World Bank, India, Dr. Hefrizal Handra, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Economics Andalas University Padang, Indonesia, Ms. Astrid Dita, Junior Researcher, Graduate School of Economics, University of Indonesia, Indonesia and Dr. Junichiro Takahata, Lecturer, Dokkyo University Saitama, Japan. The objective of this final workshop is to discuss and disseminate the findings from the research. Mr. Shimpei Yamamoto, Managing Director for research Affairs, ERIA welcomed the speakers, discussants and participants of the workshop. The keynote speech was delivered by Vice Minister of Finance, Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Prof. Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro who talked about Social Security reform in Indonesia which has just taken place in the beginning of 2014. This year is a milestone for Indonesia to transform into new social security system, and it makes the workshop - that brings analyses from other populous countries - relevant.

The workshop provided interactive and lively discussion on several important things: a) projection of age-related spending in the four countries, b) fiscal policy responses from the governments, c) institutional challenges, and d) analysis of projection models used by main organizations in the world. Dr. Fauziah Zen as ERIA Project Coordinator and Prof. Mukul Asher (NUS) as Team Leader have provided some suggestions to improve the project output and will be preparing for wider publication, as requested by participants. Acting as discussants were Mr. Mitchell Wiener (World Bank Jakarta), Dr. Xinmei Wang (Institute of Population and Labor Economics, China), Dr. Rabin Hattari (ADB Jakarta), and Dr. Donghyun Park (ADB Manila).
