The move towards carbon neutrality is accelerating, but several challenges have also emerged. The G7 has identified ‘diverse pathways’ towards carbon neutrality and has urged Asia to develop strategies based on its unique strengths and weaknesses. For instance, the region can leverage its warm climate for biomass energy, utilise its natural gas reserves, and apply Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in depleted oil and gas fields.
Any pathway to carbon neutrality will still require an increase in renewable energy, and the flexibility of the electricity system needs to be enhanced to fully exploit the region’s renewable energy potential. In this regard, Asia can take advantage of its abundant hydropower resources and the cross-border transmission of electricity through transmission linkages. Furthermore, advancements in storage battery technology and ongoing pilot projects that integrate these technologies are promising.
However, the impact on industry presents both expectations and concerns. While new energy industries may emerge from changes in the energy structure, existing energy sectors could face significant challenges to their survival. Additionally, some manufacturing processes, such as steel production and petrochemicals, are inherently difficult to decarbonise. The intensifying international competition for future industrial competitiveness further complicates the situation.
This workshop will address these various challenges and issues related to Asia's energy transition, providing insights into how to facilitate the region’s transition and maximise its benefits.
