In October 2022, ERIA hosted 1st East Asia Summit (EAS) Hydrogen Workshop, where speakers and panellists from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, and the International Renewable Energy Agency discussed the issues and challenges in developing hydrogen, and how EAS countries could learn from technology pioneers such as Japan, which has already established a hydrogen-receiving port and a demonstrated hydrogen-fired power plant in Kobe.
EAS countries understand the potential of hydrogen as a valuable source of energy in making clean energy transitions in Asia. Expanding hydrogen supply chain networks throughout the region will need a cooperation among Asian nations which are hydrogen production and consumption countries.
In this year, 2023 Edition, the 2nd EAS Hydrogen Workshop shall be held continuously for discussing the low carbon or green hydrogen supply and demand potential of the region. Discussion on the supply potential shall focus more on the feasible pathways that EAS countries perceive in their hydrogen strategy, including the cost analysis of the hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. On the demand side, the discussion should focus not only on usual sectors that are perceived to be the future main consumers of the low carbon hydrogen, i.e., power generation through cofiring in gas turbines, and transportation, through the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but also on the potential of other sectors. Those sectors are mainly the industry sectors that currently use hydrogen as feedstock such as oil refining, ammonia, methanol and steel industry.
This workshop will be opened with remarks from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), followed by keynote speeches from New Energy Development Organization (NEDO) and International Energy Agency (IEA). After that, hydrogen experts and the Hydrogen Working Group members that consists of 14 EAS countries’ representatives will discuss hydrogen supply and demand issues as well as necessary hydrogen support policies of EAS countries.
