Executive Director of ERIA attends BNERI International Annual Conference

Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimura, Executive Director of ERIA, was invited to Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI) International Annual Conference titled "Future Secure and Sustainable Energy Landscape for Brunei'' on March 25, 2014 in Brunei Darussalam.

The Conference organized with two sessions focusing on global energy policy and strategies and ensure safe, reliable and efficient supply and use of energy and over five hundred international participants from think tank, academia, government, and private sector were there. The Conference was opened by Dato Mohammad Yasmin Umar, Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office.

Prof. Nishimura made a presentation on "Energy Policy and Strategies in EAS Region" as a key note address, giving an overview of studies being implemented by ERIA such as Energy Outlook, Energy Saving Potential, Strategic Use of Coal, Energy Market Integration in ASEAN and East Asia, Power Grid Integration, Efficiency in Urban Transport, Energy Security Index and Nuclear Safety Management. He concluded to say "ERIA will continue to work on energy issues to bring pragmatic policy solutions in partnership with BNERI".

The Conference provided a comprehensive view of the global energy scene and offered interactive discussion among the participants.

On the following day, ERIA held a joint workshop with BNERI dedicated to policy issues in the development of new and renewable energy in ASEAN and East Asia region. Mr. Shimpei Yamamoto, Managing Director of Research Affairs of ERIA, delivered an opening speech. Dr. Shigeru Kimura, Special Advisor to Executive Director on Energy Affairs of ERIA, comprehensively introduced ERIA's research in regional energy policy issues. Dr. V. Anbumozhi, Energy Economist of ERIA, presented ERIA's perspectives on renewable energy issues in the region and Dr. Yanfei Li, Energy Economist of ERIA, presented ERIA's quantitative assessment of policy options in the region to better develop renewable energy in an integrated regional electricity market supported by the ASEAN power grid.

On March 24, Prof. Nishimura was also invited to Launching Ceremony of Energy Week 2014 and had a chance to meet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa' adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan. Prof. Nishimura stated His Majesty to about the cooperation in the field of Energy between BNERI and ERIA.
