Organised by: ERIA in association with the AIG (American International Group) Global Trade Series
This event, hosted by ERIA in association with the AIG Global Trade Series, explores the evolving dynamics of trade and industrial policy in South-East Asia. It focuses on critical resources and semiconductors, which are vital to the region's economic growth and global supply chains. Through three key panels, experts will discuss the region's role in the global energy transition, the reconfiguration of semiconductor supply chains, and the impact of industrial policies shaped by global powers such as the EU, US, and Japan. The event will address strategic measures to secure resource supplies, enhance trade resilience, and avoid over-dependencies, all while ensuring sustainable and equitable growth.
The panel discussions will centre on several key issues that are shaping the future of South-East Asia's role in global trade. The first panel will highlight the region, alongside Australia, as essential suppliers of critical materials such as nickel and rare earths, emphasising the importance of decarbonisation and securing supply chains. The second panel will explore the growing investments in semiconductor supply chains, examining the impact of shifting trade links and the evolving role of the region, while addressing the challenge of preventing overcapacity and maintaining strong trade ties. The third panel will focus on the resurgence of industrial policy, drawing lessons from Europe, the US, and Japan, and offering insights into the potential challenges South-East Asian countries may face as they develop their own industrial strategies.

Panel 1: Critical resources for the energy transition and South-East Asia South-East Asia and Australia play a key role in the global supply of critical materials. Nickel and rare earths, among others, are essential for decarbonisation and advanced technologies, yet their production is concentrated in a limited number of countries. How can a secure and reliable supply be guaranteed, and how can over-dependencies, such as those on Chinese sources be reduced? Additionally, how can sustainability concerns be addressed? This panel focuses on the development of resource policies in the region and their potential impact on global trade. Moderator: Divya Karyza, Journalist, The Jakarta Post Panelists:

Panel 2: The global reconfiguration of semiconductor supply chains and South-East Asia Investments are increasing in various segments of the semiconductor supply chain, as both governments and the private sector seek to develop more resilient supplies of chips. The region’s role is evolving as trade links are reconfigured. How will this impact the region’s relationships with other trading partners, and how can overcapacities be prevented?
