Non-Tariff Measures in East Asia

Completed

The increased number of Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) reflects the dynamics of regulatory reform in East Asia.

NTMs play a role of check and balance for the quality of goods.

However, not all NTMs are benign, in certain circumstances, NTMs can be used as disguised barriers to international trade and become a convenient tool to provide unnecessary protection to certain products or industries.

To make NTMs work for the common good, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has driven for transparency, collecting NTMs across East Asia and analyse the impacts of NTMs on trade.

Reports on NTMs in ASEAN and East Asia are available at Non-Tariff Measures -- An Update  and  Non-Tariff Measures in Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea: Preliminary Findings

Data on NTMs are available at TRAINS: The global database on Non-Tariff Measures
