Jakarta Media Briefing: The Role of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific

Completed

The world that ASEAN must deal with over the next two decades will be vastly different from that in which it has evolved over the past five decades. The ASEAN community will confront the challenges stemming from huge shifts in the regional and global geo-economic and geo-political landscape, including actively shaping its role in the Indo-Pacific. With the US, India, Australia, South Korea, and Japan also already weighing in with their own Indo-Pacific strategies, it is increasingly important that ASEAN promote its own clear vision. At the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok last month, the ASEAN leaders have adopted the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

What are the key elements/goals of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific?

How will the adoption of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific impact policymaking in the region?

How will other countries, especially China and the US respond to the Outlook?

Will ASEAN be able to play a leading role in the Indo-Pacific Region?

This panel discussion, co-hosted by ERIA and the Jakarta Post, will examine these issues in detail.
