Female Entrepreneurs in the ASEAN Region: Innovation to Tackle Marine Plastic Waste

Thu, 3 November 2022

Special Webinar, A collaboration between the E-S-I Knowledge Lab and the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris

As a result of rapid economic growth coupled with the lack of solid waste management infrastructure, ASEAN region is regarded today as one of the biggest contributors to marine plastic pollution. Along with policymakers, researchers and consumers, the private sector is recognized as a key stakeholder to address this issue. In an attempt to change the linear way we have been managing plastic across its lifecycle and nudge it toward a more circular production and consumption, the private sector has a greater role to play with its economic and innovative power and its capacity to induce behavior change among the consumers.

The objective of the webinar is fivefold:

  1.  Raise awareness on the current alarming situation surrounding marine plastics and highlight the efforts undertaken by the private sector to tackle this issue from both production and consumption (so-called upstream) level to recycling and waste management (so-called 'downstream') level.
  2.  Introduce innovative private sector efforts led by young female entrepreneurs from the ASEAN region in the hope to encourage the young generation, and inspire particularly young girls, and woman to consider entrepreneurship in the environmental field as a viable career option.
  3.  Share innovative good practices from Japan such as (a) research study on industry and consumer behaviour change, and (b) consumer-industry-public sectors dialogue on plastics consumption.
  4.  Highlight the Private Sector Platform launched by the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris of ERIA and invite private companies operating in the ASEAN+3 region to join the platform.
  5.  Introduce the E-S-I Knowledge Lab as the knowledge hub for the Entrepreneurship, Startup and Innovation community.
