ERIA, IDE-JETRO, Kyoto University and Waseda University Joint International Economic Symposium

Completed

East Asia has been assuming the position as a growth centre of the global economy in the 21st century. While the total population of 16 East Asian states involved in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) accounts for a half of the world's population, the total GDP does one third, and its growth is far superior to other regions. As a background of rapid economic development, this region has continued to deepen economic integration strenuously. This economic integration has been led by the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) under 'ASEAN Centrality', a concept embodied by the establishment of the ASEAN Community at the end of 2015. The ASEAN Community is believed to be the driving force for the region's further leap.

On the other hand, we cannot miss the issue of narrowing development gaps when it comes to ASEAN. With the fiftyfold difference in the GDP per capita between highest and lowest states, it is urgent to increase the vitality of firms for states to enjoy comprehensive and inclusive growth. In other words, 'Innovation', 'Strategy', and 'Survivability' would be indispensable for the whole region in the future.

In this symposium, we would like to deepen an argument about the challenges of firms to achieve further development of East Asia, where ASEAN and Japanese firms should play an active role along with above-mentioned three viewpoints. Expansion of Japanese multinational firms to ASEAN member states has been promoted since 1980s. Meanwhile, the environment surrounding the global economy has considerably changed over a few years. The development of grand strategies that lead to innovations would be critical for ASEAN, member states, and global and local firms to survive from fierce global competition. This symposium thus aims at exploring these challenging issues from academic, industrial, and policy perspectives to provide us with fruitful insights.
