ASEAN-Japan 50th Anniversary Wrap-Up Symposium: Co-Creating the Future with Trust

Throughout the 50 Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in 2023, a great number of meaningful events have taken place, involving the public and private sectors, including academic, youth and other relevant stakeholders.

Respective events have contributed to promoting cooperation and exchange between ASEAN and Japan, leading to the outcome documents of the Commemorative Summit on 16 - 18 December 2023 in Tokyo.

With the successful outcomes and deliverables in 2023, the Mission of Japan to ASEAN, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Thailand to ASEAN and Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), plans to co-organise a wrap-up symposium in Jakarta. The objective of this symposium is to highlight key achievements in the commemorative year of 2023 and to discuss the way forward in enhancing ASEAN-Japan friendship and cooperation to a new stage in the next 50 years and beyond. This will serve to promote peace, stability and prosperity amidst various challenges we are facing today.

Session Outlines
First Session “Addressing Economic and Social Challenges through Co-Creation” (TBC)

The first session will discuss ways to address socio-economic challenges in the region. ASEAN- Japan announced various initiatives upon the 50" Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, with commitments to address issues faced in the region, such as energy and food security, climate change, and digitalization, through co-creation and innovation in line with ASEAN’s goals and priorities.

The ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), as ASEAN’s core initiative, is the key milestone envisage to expand and deepen the cooperation between ASEAN and external partners in addressing issues requiring collective efforts in the region and beyond.

This session will examine various perspectives and insights to mainstream and implement AOIP, to maximise utilizing existing ASEAN-led mechanism or various ASEAN centres in the region, and the new kinds of initiatives or centres expected to be launched.
