Support for Carbon Neutral Scenario Development in Asia

Support for Carbon Neutral Scenario Development in Asia

Project Overview

Due to growing concerns about climate change, many countries have expressed their ambition to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. ASEAN countries are trying to identify future pathways towards a decarbonised society

However, deep decarbonisation in this region may be more challenging than in advanced economies due to increasing energy demand for economic growth, limited technological capabilities, and less capacity for expected cost burdens.

This study attempts to identify the cost-optimal technology mix to achieve carbon neutrality by developing and applying a linear programming energy-technology model. It fully accounts for the intermittency of variable renewable energy (VRE), with a time horizon up to 2060.
