Medical Excellence in Asia Forum: Strengthening Non-Communicable Disease Prevention in Indonesia and Beyond

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers and chronic respiratory diseases, remain the leading cause of death globally. Despite being largely preventable, NCDs continue to place a significant burden on people's livelihoods, health systems, economies and society at large. The NCD Alliance has called for accelerated action through stronger leadership, increased investment, multisectoral collaboration and community-centred approaches to advance prevention, early detection and equitable access to care.

Given the urgent need to reduce the global burden of NCDs, ERIA proposes an event to bring together stakeholders from public and private sector partnerships (PPPs) to strengthen NCD prevention in Indonesia and the wider region. The initiative will focus on practical prevention strategies, leveraging collaboration among governments, healthcare providers, academia, industry and civil society to promote healthier populations and more resilient health systems.

This initiative builds on the Medical Excellence in Asia initiative, which has facilitated regional dialogue, knowledge exchange and capacity-building on healthcare innovation, health system strengthening, disease prevention and wellness, and healthy ageing across the region.

In Indonesia, the initiative aligns closely with the Ministry of Health's Transformasi Kesehatan agenda, particularly Primary Healthcare Transformation (Transformasi Layanan Primer). Through the Integrated Primary Healthcare (ILP) approach, primary care networks, centred on Indonesia's village-level Posyandu, are being revitalised into a life-course service model. Within this model, NCD risk screening is integrated directly into routine community-level primary healthcare services. The model emphasises preventive care, community-based health services and early risk detection at the village level.
