The Asia CCUS Network has been successfully launched on 22-23rd June 2021 with initially 13 countries (all ASEAN member countries, the United States, Australia, and Japan) and more than 100 international organisations, companies, financial and research institutions. The Network members have expressed their intention to participate to share the vision of the Asia CCUS Network that aims to contribute to the decarbonisation of emissions in Asia through collaboration and cooperation on development and deployment of CCUS. The mission of this network is to facilitate deployment of CCUS through: (i) promoting knowledge sharing through holding an annual forum, conferences, workshops, and meetings; (ii) conducting research studies on technical, economical, and legal standards of CCUS in the EAS region; and (iii) holding capacity building training workshops to bridge the knowledge gap on CCUS. The Asia CCUS Network provides opportunities for countries in the region to work and collaborate on the low emission technology partnership that will eventually help to build countries’ capability to lower the cost of CCUS technology and its deployment through collaboration of research and innovation.

This is going to be the 10th Asia CCUS Network of the Knowledge Sharing Conference.

Shell’s Ambition to Achieving Net Zero by 2050

There is no single solution to the urgent challenge of cutting carbon emissions to limit global temperature rise.

At Shell, they believe that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be essential for helping society to achieve net-zero emissions and offers a way to reduce emissions from sectors that are hard-to-decarbonise. Shell’s ambition is to work with governments, customers, and partners to unlock the potential for CCS around the world.

Shell’s target is to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, and they know that their business plans need to change to make this happen.

Learning from Quest CCS

Quest is the world’s first commercial-scale CCS project in an industrial processing facility, designed to capture and permanently store more than one million tonnes of CO2 annually – equivalent to the emissions from approximately 250,000 cars. Quest is an important project for Shell, demonstrating integrated CCS operations as a model for advancing and deploying CCS technology and supporting the company’s commitment to action on climate change.

As of March 2023, Quest has captured and stored 8 million tonnes of CO₂.

Quest has been built on behalf of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) joint venture owners – Shell Canada Energy (Operator and 60% owner), Chevron Canada Limited (20%), and Marathon Oil Canada Corporation (20%), with support from the Governments of Canada and Alberta. The AOSP includes the Muskeg River and Jackpine mines (located northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta), the Scotford Upgrader and the Quest facility (both located near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta).

To learn more about the project’s success, Shell will share its extensive experience and lessons learned through implementing CCS, such that globally Quest can serve as a model for advancing and deploying CCS in oil sands and other industrial operations.

This knowledge sharing conference will be led by Dr Owain Tucker, manager for Shell CCS capability, assurance and project support, and the principal technical expert in carbon storage in Shell.
