CCUS Technical Workshop

The Asia CCUS Network has been successfully launched on 22-23rd June 2021 with initially 13 countries (all ASEAN member countries, the United States, Australia, and Japan) and more than 100 international organisations, companies, financial and research institutions that share the vision of CCUS development throughout the Asian region. The Network members have expressed their intention to participate to share the vision of the Asia CCUS Network that aims to contribute to the decarbonisation of emissions in Asia through collaboration and cooperation on development and deployment of CCUS. The mission of this network is to facilitate deployment of CCUS through: (i) promoting knowledge sharing through holding an annual forum, conferences, workshops, and meetings; (ii) conducting research studies on technical, economical, and legal standards of CCUS in the EAS region; and (iii) holding capacity building training workshops to bridge the knowledge gap on CCUS. The Asia CCUS Network provides opportunities for countries in the region to work and collaborate on the low emission technology partnership that will eventually help to build countries’ capability to lower the cost of CCUS technology and its deployment through collaboration of research and innovation.

At the 1st Asia CCUS Network Forum held on 22-23 June 2021, it was concluded that CCUS and Carbon Recycling are crucial technologies for the ASEAN region to achieve carbon neutrality amidst climate and energy security concerns in the future. It was also discussed by the stakeholders that participated in the Forum, that in order to bring more CCUS projects to commercialization stage, issues, such as the lack of an adequate legal framework to address liability and a technical framework through pilot projects need to be resolved. Moreover, it is expected that in order to accelerate the deployment of CCUS in ASEAN region, there is a need to bridge the gap and to implement knowledge and experience sharing amongst the ASEAN and Asian region.

Building upon the outcome of the 1st Asia CCUS Network Forum as described above, the Asia CCUS Network (ACN) will organize a virtual technical workshop about CCUS in the October 2021. This workshop hosted by ACN aims to serve as an opportunity to instill knowledge about latest technologies and the current trend of CCUS through real case studies by top notch lecturers.

The goals of the CCUS technical workshops are as follows.

  • Promote the knowledge sharing on the latest CCUS technology through lecture session.

  • Accelerate further consideration of application of mainstream CCUS technologies to ASEAN region.

  • Exchange ideas and issues about CCUS technology.

There will be a total of three workshops to be organized. The 1st day of the workshop is about the technical aspect of carbon capture technology. The 2nd day is the technical aspect of transport & storage technology. The 3rd day will be about the utilization of CO2.
