Analysis of ASEAN Issues Related to Stable Supply of Critical Minerals
Project Overview
This project investigates the strategic importance of ASEAN’s critical mineral supply chain and its role in supporting global clean energy transitions and advanced manufacturing. As demand for key minerals, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements, is projected to rise up to tenfold by 2050, ASEAN’s vast reserves position the region as a pivotal supplier. These resources are essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, and other high-tech industries, not only within ASEAN but also for major economies such as the US, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and India.
However, the supply chain faces notable risks, particularly from China’s dominance in rare earth production and processing, which creates vulnerabilities in times of geopolitical tension. This study also assesses these risks and identifies opportunities for co-operation amongst ASEAN Member States and global partners. It aims to propose strategies for strengthening resilience, diversifying supply, and enhancing regional integration in critical mineral value chains.
