ERIA School of Government’s Second Public Seminar Examines Philippine Security Landscape
Jakarta, 14 April 2026: The ERIA School of Government (So G) conducted its Second Public Seminar, a session designed to promote open academic dialogue and knowledge exchange amongst ERIA colleagues, partner institutions, and the broader research community.
By bringing together colleagues and external experts, the seminar aimed to enrich discussions, foster collaboration, and further strengthen research under the ERIA So G project. The seminar featured Mr Andrew Mines, ERIA So G Consultant whose work focuses on the development of the Philippines’ defence and security policy.
The event opened with opening remarks by Professor Nobuhiro Aizawa, Dean of the ERIA School of Government, followed by a presentation by Mr Mines on the evolution of security policy in the Philippines.
A wide range of issues and approaches were discussed. The Philippines has made significant efforts to increase its self-reliance in terms of defence and maintain operational readiness. At the same time, the country continues to face several challenges, including the South China Sea conflict, the Bangsamoro peace process, and other domestic issues.
The discussion also highlighted positive developments, including the expansion of the Philippines’ defence network. The importance of the Bangsamoro peace process to the country’s overall security landscape was also underscored.
The presentation was followed by an engaging discussion focusing on ASEAN perspectives and security concerns in the region, including questions on the South China Sea conflict.
The seminar reflected ERIA So G’s broader efforts to foster an inclusive scholarly community by encouraging its fellows to engage with partners committed to addressing regional public policy challenges. Through this programme, ERIA So G seeks to build a network of experts dedicated to advancing regional public interests and supporting community-building in Southeast and East Asia.
