ERIA School of Government Meets BRIN Vice Chairman to Explore Collaboration on Science and Policy
Jakarta, 5 February 2026: The ERIA School of Government (So G) held a meeting with Mr Amarulla Octavian, Vice Chairman of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), on 5 February 2026 to explore potential collaboration on science, technology, and innovation policy.
The discussion introduced ERIA’s role as a regional policy think tank serving ASEAN, headquartered in Jakarta, with close engagement with the ASEAN Secretariat. The ERIA So G emphasised its interest in strengthening co-operation with BRIN, particularly in science policy, given the growing importance of scientific and technological foundations in public policy, economic development, and national security.
Prof. Nobuhiro Aizawa, Dean and Managing Director of the ERIA So G, underlined the need for a comprehensive and strategic approach to science policy, noting that global competition is increasingly shaped by advances in science and technology. The meeting explored the concept of a national science policy framework that clarifies the government’s role in steering scientific development for the public good, including economic, social, and security objectives. In this context, the ERIA So G expressed strong interest in collaborating with BRIN on policy-oriented research addressing the dual-use nature of emerging technologies.
Mr Octavian welcomed the opportunity to explore collaboration and shared insights into BRIN’s ongoing research priorities.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to further explore concrete areas of collaboration through joint research projects, workshops, and policy dialogues. Both the ERIA So G and BRIN expressed a shared commitment to advancing science-based policymaking for national and regional benefit.
