The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) invites submissions of original research proposals for its project, Sustaining Viet Nam’s Economic Miracle: the Role of Productivity Growth. The project objective, background, potential topics, and other information can be found in the accompanying Terms of Reference (TOR). The project is led by Ian Coxhead (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Diep Phan (Beloit College), and Rashesh Shrestha (ERIA).

Research proposals should be submitted by email to Rashesh Shrestha ([email protected]) and David Christian ([email protected]) no later than 5 PM Jakarta time (UTC+7) on Wednesday, 16 June 2021. Early submission is encouraged. We will notify the authors of selected proposals by 30 July 2021 at the latest.

Proposals should be a maximum of 2,000 words and clearly lay out the research question, methodology, data sources, and relevance to the theme of the project. The proposals will ideally include a combination of theoretical and empirical analyses to derive policy lessons. Research using micro-level data is especially encouraged.

ERIA will provide financial support of US$8,000 (eight thousand US dollars) for one paper, irrespective of the number of authors.

In addition, exceptional proposals may also be supported in acquiring secondary data needed for the study. The budget for data acquisition is limited, so we will prioritise studies that can be completed using data that are already available to the author(s). In your proposal, please indicate clearly the additional secondary data that needs to be acquired to conduct your study. Proposals requiring primary data collection or fieldwork will not be considered.

Output

The author of successful proposals will be contracted by ERIA as a consultant. The main deliverable will be a publication-quality research paper. The consultant will also be required to participate in two workshops (in-person, virtual, or hybrid as the situation permits). For in-person workshop, ERIA will cover the travel and lodging costs of one author per paper.
