ASEAN Alternative Vehicle Technology Portal (A2VTP) and Outlook

This study analyzes the vehicle market developments and the transition to electrified vehicle technologies across five ASEAN Member States: Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Viet Nam, and Lao PDR. By establishing a harmonized dataset, the research reveals a regional shift away from internal combustion engines, with electric vehicle (EV) adoption expected to accelerate significantly after the late 2020s.

However, the transition's pace varies by country, driven by distinct policy ambitions, industrial strategies, and infrastructure readiness. The findings highlight that macroeconomic growth alone cannot guarantee rapid electrification under business-as-usual conditions. Instead, EV adoption depends heavily on targeted policy design and incentive structures.
