This book examines the promotion of active ageing in Southeast Asia using working life expectancy (WLE) as a practical, policy-relevant indicator of ageing outcomes. Amid rapid demographic change in ASEAN Member States, it applies to the WHO active ageing framework, emphasising health, participation, and security to enhance quality of life in later years. Drawing on ERIA-supported longitudinal survey data from the Philippines and Viet Nam, alongside similar data from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and India, the book highlights the importance and contribution of extending productive engagement, particularly through continued participation in work, while recognising both the challenges and opportunities of population ageing. Central to the analysis, WLE at age 60 measures expected years of employment amongst older persons, linking longevity with labour force participation. The book presents estimation methods, country analyses, projections to 2040, economic gains and loss by changing WLE, and policy scenarios. Findings show that longer working lives can support economic growth, strengthen financial independence, and ease fiscal pressures, informing labour and retirement policy reforms.
