ERIA Reviews Progress on Green Hydrogen Supply Chain Study in Brunei Darussalam

Bandar Seri Begawan, 24 September 2026: ERIA held an interim meeting for the feasibility study ‘Green Hydrogen Supply Chain in Brunei Darussalam for e-Fuel Production and Export’, followed by a site visit to a local methanol plant.

The meeting aimed to review findings, validate key assumptions and data, and exchange views on the technical, commercial, and institutional considerations for developing a green hydrogen and e-fuel supply chain in Brunei Darussalam. Held in a hybrid format, the meeting brought together representatives from ERIA; Brunei Darussalam’s Department of Energy, Upstream and Downstream at the Prime Minister’s Office; Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam; Brunei Economic Development Board; Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; and Chiyoda Corporation.

Dr Alloysius Joko Purwanto, Senior Economist at ERIA, opened the meeting by emphasising the growing importance of energy security amidst ongoing global crises and the need to diversify energy resources. ERIA’s study explores Brunei Darussalam’s potential for low-carbon hydrogen production, while identifying opportunities to advance pilot and commercial projects.

In her welcoming remarks, Ms Noor Dina Zharina binti Haji Yahya, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Upstream and Downstream) at the Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted the long-standing collaboration between Brunei Darussalam and ERIA. She noted that hydrogen is gaining relevance not only for energy security and industrial growth, but also as a means of reducing emissions. She further stressed that hydrogen production requires an enabling ecosystem encompassing demand creation, infrastructure, investment risk mitigation, international standards, and skills development. These elements would help Brunei Darussalam develop investable domestic pathways and shape a pragmatic hydrogen roadmap.

The first session featured the following presentations:

  • Mr Kentaro Noma, Programme Manager on Energy at ERIA, outlined the project structure, timeline, initial findings, outstanding analyses, and priority issues for consultation.
  • Ms Laksmita Dwi Hersaputri, Research Associate at ERIA, presented the study’s objectives and international benchmarks for industrial decarbonisation.
  • Ms Shafa Nabilla Haya, Research Associate at ERIA, explained the potential of domestic and imported renewable energy for hydrogen production.
  • Dr I Gusti Suarnaya Sidemen, Senior Consultant for Energy at ERIA, detailed the assessment of hydrogen infrastructure and CO₂ feedstock.

In the second session, Mr Sato Hideki, Engineering Manager of the Industrial Solutions Department at Chiyoda Corporation, explained the technical, techno-economic, and environmental aspects of hydrogen and e-fuel technology pathways and transition scenarios. Mr Ryan Wiratama Bhaskara, Research Associate at ERIA, then discussed regional markets, competitiveness, offtake opportunities, and implementation considerations.

As part of the programme, ERIA and the Department of Energy, Upstream and Downstream at the Prime Minister’s Office conducted a site visit to Brunei Methanol Company. The visit provided participants with practical insights into existing industrial infrastructure and potential opportunities for integration to support future hydrogen and e-fuel supply chains.
