ERIA and Cambodia Explore Pathways to Strengthen LPG Penetration and Gas Technology Diversification

Phnom Penh, 28 October 2026: ERIA held a validation workshop for its research project, ‘Enhancing LPG and Gas Innovation through Technology, Efficiency and Standardisation (E-LITE)’, to validate the study’s key findings and recommendations and gather feedback from relevant stakeholders, including Cambodia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME).

Dr Nuki Agya Utama, Director for Energy Policy at ERIA and Head of the Asia Zero Emission Center, opened the workshop by highlighting recent liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply disruptions due to the recent Strait of Hormuz closure. He emphasised that energy security extends beyond the security of supply to encompass storage, reliable distribution, and effective safety regulation. The study underscores the importance of improving the reliability, safety standards, and accessibility of existing LPG services and infrastructure, while also exploring diversification into other gas technologies, including compressed natural gas (CNG), small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG), and adsorbed natural gas (ANG).

H.E. Cheap Sour, Secretary of State at Cambodia’s MME, reiterated the importance of LPG to Cambodia, given the country’s heavy reliance on imports and growing demand. He also stressed that diversification into other gas technologies should be considered only when supported by sound technical evidence and economic feasibility, without imposing additional fiscal or regulatory burdens.

The workshop featured presentations and discussions on the following topics:

  • Study overview and workshop objectives, presented by Mr Kentaro Noma, Programme Manager for Energy at ERIA
  • Context setting and technology options review, presented by Ms Nadiya Pranindita, Research Associate at ERIA
  • Comparative technology assessments, presented by Mr Adityo Wicaksono of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)
  • Benchmarking regulatory readiness, presented by Mr Firman Tri Ajie of BRIN
  • Proposed recommendations and roadmap, presented by Dr Andi Tabrani, Senior Energy Economist at ERIA, and Dr I Gusti Suarnaya Sidemen, Senior Consultant for Energy at ERIA

The workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to offer feedback on the study’s findings and recommendations, helping ensure that the proposed roadmap reflects Cambodia’s energy priorities, regulatory context, and technical and economic considerations.
