The Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) is a platform for cooperation towards achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions in the Asia region. It involves partner countries from eleven nations: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The Second AZEC Ministerial Meeting was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 21 August 2024. As an outcome of the meeting, participating ministers adopted a joint statement reaffirming the AZEC Principles, which include the utilisation of “various pathways towards net-zero emissions” and the need to “address climate change, promote economic growth, and achieve energy security simultaneously.” They also agreed on AZEC Sectoral Initiatives aimed at promoting decarbonisation in the power, transport, and industry sectors over the coming decade.

Inspired by AZEC, partner countries are actively engaging in decarbonisation through numerous projects related to the AZEC Sectoral Initiatives. However, there remain significant challenges to be overcome in achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions. Furthermore, financial mechanisms such as transition finance are crucial to accelerating the energy transition in a sustainable manner.

Therefore, at this AZEC Business Forum, we will share the latest developments and challenges within each business sector, as well as discuss potential solutions to these challenges, including the necessary financial mechanisms.
