ERIA SoG Facilitates Indonesia–AIST Dialogue on Advanced Technology and Research Collaboration

Tsukuba City, 5 March 2026: The ERIA School of Government (So G) organised a strategic meeting and research facility visit at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba, Japan. The visit brought together Professor Arif Satria, Chairman of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN); H.E. Faisol Riza, Vice Minister of Industry of Indonesia; Mr Haruhiko Obara, Senior Vice-President at AIST; as well as researchers and officials from AIST and members of the Indonesian delegation.

The programme consisted of a strategic meeting followed by a facility visit to AIST’s advanced research laboratories. Discussions focused on potential collaboration in emerging technologies, including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced materials. AIST representatives highlighted the institute’s role in developing technological solutions for global challenges and its close collaboration with industry and international partners.

During the facility visit, the delegation was introduced to AIST’s research infrastructure, including hybrid computing platforms integrating quantum computers, high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities, and artificial intelligence systems. Researchers also explained ongoing efforts to develop advanced computing environments that combine multiple computing technologies to support complex scientific and industrial applications.

Both sides exchanged views on potential collaboration between Indonesian and Japanese research institutions, including joint research initiatives, researcher exchanges, and capacity-building programmes for scientists and engineers. AIST expressed interest in expanding its international research partnerships, including with ASEAN countries such as Indonesia.

This engagement forms part of ERIA’s ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue between research institutions, government stakeholders, and industry, and to promote practical avenues for scientific and technological co-operation between Indonesia and Japan in emerging and advanced technologies.
