ERIA School of Government Hosts Executive Roundtable on Regional Cooperation in Technology and Security
Jakarta, 15 October 2025: The ERIA School of Government successfully hosted the Executive Roundtable on Regional Cooperation in Technology and Security, held from 09:00h to 17:00h Jakarta Time. The event convened experts, policymakers, and key industry leaders to discuss pressing issues at the intersection of technology and security.
Notable participants included representatives from Indonesian government agencies, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and leading private sector actors from both countries. Several showcased cutting-edge technologies, enriching the dialogue with real-world applications and forward-looking insights.
In his opening remarks, Professor Nobuhiro Aizawa, Dean and Managing Director of the ERIA School of Government, emphasised the transformative impact of technology on security, prosperity, and governance. He noted that these shifts manifest differently depending on each country's social, geographical, and geopolitical conditions, presenting both challenges and opportunities for economic growth. He underscored the importance of unity and collaboration, highlighting the unique partnership between Japan and Indonesia – two archipelagic and democratic nations in Asia that share common challenges and advantages.
Mr Osamu Nishiwaki, Director General for Trade and Economic Security at METI, also delivered opening remarks. He stated:
‘Building on the prior exchanges between METI and ASEAN partners, this roundtable marks an important step toward enhancing the autonomy of supply chains across the region. I sincerely hope that today’s gathering will inspire new ideas and reveal significant opportunities for collaboration between Japan and Indonesia, as well as Japan and ASEAN as a whole.’
The roundtable focused on emerging technological developments, particularly in the space, maritime, and telecommunications sectors. Participants discussed domestic and regional challenges and explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in response to rapid technological shifts that are reshaping the regional security environment. These advancements are not only redefining security needs but also driving industrial competitiveness and economic growth.

- Improving maritime security
- Developing secure communication networks
- Advancing AI applications
- Protecting critical infrastructure
- Strengthening regional resilience through joint initiatives
Participants also emphasised the need for closer coordination between government and industry, policy alignment, and joint efforts to tackle shared challenges.
