Jakarta, 30 July 2024: ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe received a courtesy visit from the Chief Executive Officer of the Global CCS Institute, Jarad Daniels, at the ERIA office on Tuesday, 30 July 2024. Jarad Daniels was accompanied by Alex Zapantis, General Manager for External Affairs, Poh Boon Ung, and the General Manager for Business Development and Engagement at the Global CCS Institute.

The two leaders shared their views on the important role that CCS (carbon capture and storage) may play in achieving net zero emissions. They discussed the benefits and challenges of CCS, including the role of government policy, regional collaboration, technology, finance, and public acceptance of CCS implementation. They concluded that research institutions need to scrutinise the most important factors for CCS technology commercialisation and design the most efficient interventions that will have the greatest impact on enabling the commercialisation of CCS projects, considering site conditions and country-specific circumstances.

President Watanabe expressed his gratitude for the Global CCS Institute's support of the Asia CCUS Network's work and expressed hope for continued collaboration with the institute in the future. Topics for future collaboration include public education and public acceptance of CCS projects, research on financing CCS, and the development of regulatory frameworks to accelerate CCS commercialisation in the Asia region.
