ERIA Presents Roadmaps for ASEAN–Japan Collaboration in Next-Generation Industries at AEM–METI Consultations

Kuala Lumpur, 24 September 2025: ERIA presented key research findings on how ASEAN and Japan can co-create growth in emerging strategic sectors during the 31st ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) – Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) consultations.

ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe shared insights from two flagship studies developed under the AEM–METI framework:

  1. ASEAN–Japan Automotive Masterplan
  2. ASEAN–Japan AI Innovation Roadmap

Both studies outline pathways for joint action in response to global economic and technological shifts, and propose strategies to strengthen regional competitiveness through deeper ASEAN–Japan collaboration.

The Automotive Masterplan underscores that ASEAN’s automotive industry – long a cornerstone of the region’s manufacturing base – is undergoing rapid transformation. To stay at the heart of global supply chains, the region must address diverse mobility needs, accelerate industrial upgrading, and advance decarbonisation and digitalisation. Japan’s experience indigital and green transformation offers valuable lessons and technical expertise, while ERIA will continue to facilitate policy dialogue and coordination among ASEAN Member States.

The AI Innovation Roadmap highlights the potential for ASEAN and Japan to co-create a regional AI ecosystem. ASEAN’s vibrant digital economy, young workforce, and growing start-up landscape form a strong base, complemented by Japan’s advanced research capacity, leadership in robotics, and mature governance frameworks. The roadmap proposes initiatives intalent development, infrastructure enhancement, AI adoption, and innovation collaboration, with the goal of establishing a trusted and competitive AI environment in the region.

President Watanabe also briefed ministers on the progress of ERIA’s Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Centre (E-DISC). Since its establishment 2 years ago, E-DISC has expanded its role as a regional hub for digital co-creation, supporting policy dialogues, linking start-ups with investors and policymakers, and contributing to the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) negotiations.

ASEAN and Japanese ministers welcomed ERIA’s contributionsas a foundation for deepening the ASEAN–Japan economic partnership. They noted that collaboration in automotive transformation and AI innovation can create new growth opportunities, strengthen regional resilience, and enhance long-term competitivenes across the region.
