The 6th ASEAN Economic Integration Forum (AEIF) 2024

Completed
The 6th ASEAN Economic Integration Forum (AEIF) 2024

Wed, 7 August 2024

The 6th ASEAN Economic Integration Forum (AEIF) 2024 is a hybrid forum that combines high-level and expert-led discussions. It aims to provide an open, engaging, and forward-looking platform for deliberating common regional issues and challenges.

This flagship and collaborative program, initiated by the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS) at The National University of Malaysia (UKM), has involved various institutions and corporate partners since 2015. The 6th AEIF 2024 follows previous forums held at Oxford University (2015), Kuala Lumpur (2016), ESCAP Bangkok (2017 and 2019), and the World Trade Institute (WTI) in Bern (2022).

The 6th AEIF 2024 will focus on several key topics, particularly in light of Malaysia's upcoming role as Chair of ASEAN in 2025. Malaysia is expected to conclude the ASEAN Community Post-2025 Vision, including the ASEAN Vision 2045 and the Strategic Plans for the Vision Document. The forum aims to deliberate on and provide insights into the following topics:

  • Megatrends in ASEAN: Geopolitics, geoeconomics, and their impact on ASEAN 2045.
  • Towards the ASEAN Community Vision 2045: Building deeper integration and enhancing ASEAN centrality.
  • Technology and Sustainability: Transforming ASEAN from technology adopters to technology frontrunners, focusing on the semiconductor, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicle value chains, and ensuring supply chain sustainability.
  • Inclusive and Responsible Business: Investment and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations in ASEAN.
  • Talent Development and Labour: Migration and development within ASEAN.
  • Climate-Related Initiatives: Trade, investments, and climate-related actions.
  • Narrowing the Development Gap: Enhancing MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) competitiveness.

As with previous forums, the 6th AEIF 2024 aims to produce a written publication with actionable policy takeaways, which will be widely disseminated for further policy deliberation and implementation. The event is jointly organized by IKMAS (UKM) and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), with support from Kaneka Corporation, The Kaneka Foundation Endowment at IKMAS UKM, the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-Jetro), the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), the ASEAN University Network (AUN), and the Society of Chartered Professional ESG Practitioners (Malaysia).
