Bangkok, 10 November 2019: The annual Research Institute Network (RIN) meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand on 10 November 2019. It was attended by the 15 RIN members. This meeting was organised by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in cooperation with the Institute of Developing Economies- Japan External Trade Organisation (IDE-JETRO).

Dr Hank Lim Giok-Hay, from the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and the RIN Chairperson, moderated the meeting. The meeting was opened by the remarks from Prof Hidetoshi Nishimura as the President of ERIA and Mr Naoyoshi Noguchi, the newly-appointed President of Bangkok Research Center, JETRO Bangkok.

In his opening remarks, ERIA President, Prof Hidetoshi Nishimura welcomed the RIN members and thanked IDE-JETRO for their support. Prof Nishimura highlighted ERIA’s participation in the EAS Economic Ministerial meeting, the G20 Trade in Digital Economy meeting, and the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS). Prof Nishimura also stated that ERIA will continue to focus on the themes of trade and investment and industrial policy.

In the morning session, Dr Hank Lim introduced  six new attendees for the RIN meeting: Dr Juita Mohammad from ISIS Malaysia, Dr Tin Win from Yangon University of Economics Myanmar, Dr Ceila M. Reyes from the Philippines Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), Dr Nguyen Anh Duong from Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) of Vietnam, Dr Yuzilawati Binti Haji Abdullah from the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS) of Brunei Darussalam, and Ms Mayumi Murayama from the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO).

This was followed by a presentation of ERIA’s Research Projects in FY 2019 delivered by the Chief Economist of ERIA, Prof Fukunari Kimura. Dr Lurong Chen, ERIA economist, delivered a presentation on ‘Service Supply Chains: Impact on Trade and Development’, followed by a presentation by Dr Han Phoumin with the title ‘The Energy Poverty in India, China and the ASEAN States’.

In the afternoon session, Mr Taizo Hara the Director General for Research Administration called for proposal on Collaborative Research Projects for FY 2020. The afternoon session covered the on-going ERIA Research Projects including: ‘The Industrial Clusters, linkages and manufacturing productivity growth’, ‘Research on Waste Management, Circular Economy, and Marin Plastic Debris’ and ‘Understanding the Economic Effects of Financial Inclusion in ASEAN and East Asia’.  Dr Shiro Armstrong, RIN Member, Research Fellow at the Crawford School of Economics and Government, Australian National University, and Executive Director of the East Asian Bureau of Economic Research, led the discussion on the topic of East Asia’ Economic Challenges. Dr Yose Rizal Damuri, RIN Member and the Head of the Department of Economics, Centre of Strategic and International Studies, Indonesia, also delivered his presentation on “Impact of Trade War and Possible Responses”. Lastly, Shimpei Taniguchi, the Director of Planning and Coordination of ERIA, requested recommendations for the nomination of candidates for the 5th Asia Cosmopolitan Awards.

Dr Hank Lim delivered the closing remarks and wrapped up the meeting.
