Special Advisor on Energy Affairs in ERIA attends 2nd LNG Producer-Consumer Conference

The 2nd LNG Producer -Consumer Conference "The Door is Open towards Competitive Gas Procurement" was held on September 10, 2013 in Tokyo, Japan.

It was hosted by the Ministry of Economic, Trade and Industry, Japan (METI) and the Asia Pacific Energy Research Center (APERC). A total of 1,000 participants from about 50 countries/economies including ministers and CEOs of energy companies joined the conference. The conference started with two keynote addresses. The first address was from H.E. Mr. Toshimitsu Motegi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan and the second address was from H.E. Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry, Qatar.

Mr. Shigeru Kimura, Special Adviser on Energy Affairs in Economic Research Institute in ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), was the moderator in the panel discussion in Session 1, which had three excellent panelists: Mr. Michael Hagar, Head of Cabinet of Gunter Oettinger European Commission, Mr. Sheng-Chung Lin, Chairman of CPC Corporation in Taiwan and Mr. Hirobumi Kawano, President of Japan Oil, Gas and Metal National Corporation (JOGMEC). After the presentations by the panelists, Mr. Kimura summarized the important actions by consumers in LNG procurement: These are as follows:

� diversification of gas supply sources

� diversification of energy sources

� financial support on LNG development

� flexible LNG import contract, and

� reform of pricing mechanism,

The conference took note of high LNG prices in Asia and discussed about actions towards competitive LNG procurement for an affordable LNG price in Asia.
