Jakarta, 27 December 2023: The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) launched a research initiative to explore the intricate dynamics of carbon pricing, revenue recycling, and competitiveness within the ASEAN and East Asia countries. This survey aims to gather crucial insights and perspectives from experts and stakeholders in the field to drive the development of sustainable policies across the region.
Carbon pricing, a pivotal policy tool, operates by accounting for the external costs associated with carbon emissions. By assigning a monetary value to these costs and attributing responsibility to emission sources, this strategy encourages a reduction in emissions and facilitates the adoption of low-carbon technologies. Equally important, the revenue generated from these mechanisms can be channelled towards supporting sustainable practices, ranging from employee benefits to investments in health insurance.
Despite the implementation of carbon pricing mechanisms in select countries within ASEAN and East Asia, there exists a significant knowledge gap regarding individual preferences for these mechanisms at both national and regional levels. Furthermore, as the European Commission proposes a carbon border adjustment mechanism aiming to standardise carbon prices for globally traded products, understanding preferences for such policy instruments among key stakeholders and countries becomes crucial.
In light of these critical issues, ERIA extends a warm invitation to experts and stakeholders in the region to participate in a regional survey on ‘Willingness to Pay for a Carbon Price.’ Your invaluable insights are instrumental in quantifying the willingness to pay for carbon, a vital aspect in shaping future policies. All information collected will be utilised exclusively for academic research purposes, with strict confidentiality maintained to protect personal data.
