Jakarta, 9 May 2025: In response to growing regional complexities and the increasing demand for evidence-based journalism, ERIA convened the East Asia Media Caucus (EAMC) at its Jakarta headquarters. As an evolution of ERIA’s annual Editors’ Roundtable, the EAMC reflects ERIA’s deepening commitment to fostering collaboration amongst journalists, policymakers, and researchers from East Asia Summit (EAS) countries.
The EAMC provides a strategic platform for dialogue, enabling media professionals to engage directly with leading experts on critical regional issues such as economic transformation, governance challenges, and geopolitical shifts in East and Southeast Asia.
‘We are gathered for the East Asia Media Caucus – a platform for journalists, experts, and thinkers across our region to share insights and ideas,’ said Toru Furuichi, Chief Operating Officer of ERIA, in his opening remarks. ‘Your work helps the public navigate complex issues and bridges the gap between people and policymakers. Through this caucus, we hope you will gain new knowledge, ask bold questions, and build strong connections across the region.’
One of the central topics discussed was ASEAN’s approach to the situation in Myanmar, and its broader implications for regional stability, economic outlook, and diplomatic engagement. In this context, the EAMC aimed to equip journalists with the tools and perspectives necessary for accurate and nuanced reporting.
‘We believe the media plays a strategic role in shaping a healthy public narrative. EAMC reflects our commitment to supporting accurate and constructive journalism amid the region’s dynamic developments,’ added Kavi Chongkittavorn, Senior Communications Advisor at ERIA.
The caucus was held alongside the ERIA Media Welcome Day, an orientation programme that introduced journalists to ERIA’s mission, research focus, and policy priorities. With participation from over ten national and international media outlets, the event expanded journalist access to ERIA’s knowledge base while fostering stronger engagement with EAS country representatives.
The event also highlighted ERIA’s growing network of flagship centres aligned with its evolving policy agenda:
- The ERIA School of Government (SoG): A platform for cultivating leadership and policy expertise across the region.
- The Asia Zero Emission Center (AZEC): Supporting decarbonisation and sustainable growth across Asia.
- The ERIA Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Centre (E-DISC): Driving digital transformation and inclusive development.
- The Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris (RKC-MPD): Promoting circular economy solutions and marine plastic reduction in ASEAN+3.
More than a ceremonial gathering, the East Asia Media Caucus and Media Welcome Day are part of ERIA’s long-term commitment to strengthening regional journalism, deepening multistakeholder collaboration, and advancing inclusive and sustainable regional integration.
