The Asian High School Student's Forum was held on 15 October 2014 at Hidaka High School, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan and ERIA Executive Director Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimura was invited as a resource speaker and commentator. The aim of the Forum is to contribute to the development of students who will play an active role in the global society.

After a rigorous screening, around 60 qualified high school students from ASEAN and East Asia were selected to attend the Forum where they actively participated in the discussions and presentations of issues that the region is facing now such as environmental issues, disaster management, food and traditional culture. The discussions were categorized into three topics, namely: Asian Tourism, Asian Environment, and Asian Culture. The students had a lively exchange of views, knowledge and experiences.

Prof. Nishimura shared his expertise regarding the future prospects of the Asian region, expressing his views that the barriers or walls in economic and information exchanges in Asia are now much lower and that developing more people-to-people exchanges in tourism, education and culture in the region has become very important. And this, it seems, is exactly what constitutes the perspective and point of view of today's Asian high school student.

Serving as Commentator during the Asian Culture session as well as the Closing session, Prof. Nishimura encouraged the students to have a good understanding of their own country in order to be an internationally minded person, saying that in order for all human beings - with their different cultures and religions - to co-exist and co-prosper, we need to know about ourselves and understand the culture of our own country and respect them. Then and only then can international exchange be started.
