Vientiane, 17-19 July 2024: The second annual Symposium on Accelerating Science, Technology, and Circular Innovation in Southeast Asia brought together a dynamic community of experts, policymakers, and innovators to address the region's most pressing challenges and opportunities. Held from 17-19 July 2024 in Vientiane, Lao PDR, this event, organised by the US–ASEAN Science and Technology Innovation Program, delved deep into three critical areas: smart sustainable cities, cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, and the circular economy and entrepreneurship.

A cornerstone of the symposium was the exploration of smart city solutions tailored to Southeast Asia's unique context. Participants engaged in robust discussions on how to leverage technology to enhance urban living, improve infrastructure, and reduce environmental impact. From optimising transportation systems and managing waste efficiently to harnessing renewable energy and creating inclusive public spaces, the symposium showcased innovative approaches to building sustainable cities.

Experts from academia, industry, and government convened to share knowledge, identify research priorities, and explore partnerships to address common challenges. The event highlighted the potential of joint research initiatives, technology transfer, and capacity building to accelerate innovation and create a more competitive Southeast Asia.

The workshop on the circular economy, jointly organised by the Department of State, Arizona State University (ASU), and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), placed a strong emphasis on the circular economy as a key strategy for sustainable growth in the region. Participating in the panels as a keynote speaker, Dr Venkatachalam Anbumozhi, Senior Research Fellow for Innovations at ERIA, presented critical opportunities to reduce waste, conserve resources, and create new economic value through circular business models. He showcased successful circular economy initiatives, from waste management and recycling to product design and eco-innovation.

Recognising the vital role of entrepreneurship in driving innovation, Helen Santiago Fink of the US Department of State, Prof. Williams, and Clyde Eirikur Hull of RIT highlighted the potential of circular economy-based startups to create jobs, generate economic growth, and address environmental challenges. Through a combination of keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, the symposium fostered a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing and idea exchange. The symposium, organised in support of Lao PDR’s ASEAN chairmanship, showcased the latest advancements in circular and smart city innovations and catalysed action, inspiring participants to contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous region.
