ERIA Contributes to Ministry of Public Works Forum on Innovations in Accelerating Infrastructure

Infrastructure performance plays key role of global competiveness. Some characteristics of sustainable infrastructure are delivering maximum economic impact, environmental friendliness and social acceptance. In the upcoming years, a number of such issues will define accelerated infrastructure development in key emerging economies like Indonesia.
In order to discuss the key challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable infrastructure development, Ministry of Public Works, Government of Indonesia organized an International Forum titled "Innovations in Accelerating Infrastructure: Competiveness and Sustainability" on November 11, 2014 in Denpasar, Bali. About 200 senior government officials, private sector representatives and academia from across Indonesia participated in the dialogue surrounding the three sub themes of environmental vulnerability and resilience, Conflict resolution and economic impact Assessment.
The forum was inaugurated by Mr. WakitoBandu, Director General of Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Public Works, wherein, he stressed the need for working together by all the stakeholders to increase the local resilience of infrastructure by maximizing the adaptive capacity on the one hand and improving the mitigation technology on the other. Dr. Venkatachalam, Senior Energy Economist of ERIA made a presentation on "Public Expenditure on Climate Resilient Infrastructure", wherein he shared the regional experiences in responding to climate change and there relevance of improving the national budget systems and the role of markets through investment and insurance, to face the sustainability challenges. With the focus on concepts and cases, other papers and discussions laid the ground for more structured and systematic planning of sustainable infrastructure from the perspective of innovation and competiveness.
