Profile
Reo Kawamura has spent over 20 years as a government official in Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE). During his tenure, he focused on various environmental policies, particularly in areas such as climate change mitigation, biodiversity, and promotion of sustainable fashion. Recently, he worked on the consideration of a new statutory plan for Japan's environmental policy, aiming to enhance its environment, economy, and society by aligning it with contemporary trends such as carbon neutrality, the circular economy, and nature-positive initiatives.
Kawamura also had international assignments, including working with the OECD in France and serving in roles within the Ministry of Finance and the Nuclear Regulation Agency. After serving as the Director of the Office of Environmental Education and concurrently as Senior Planning Officer of the General Policy Division, starting in July 2023, Kawamura has taken the helm of the Environment Unit and the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris (RKC-MPD) at the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).
