ERIA Special Lecture on “Renewable Energy in ASEAN”

Sustainable Energy Conversion and Resource Recycle: A Challenge of Biomass Conversion by Clean Energy

Lectured by Dr. Satoshi Konishi, Professor of Kyoto University

Programme

Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) has conducted a variety of studies on energy policy in ASEAN. According to ERIA’s research, the amount of energy consumption in this region will practically double in 2040. Therefore, conventional energy may still be used by most ASEAN and East Asian countries to satisfy the growing energy demand, with efforts to reduce the environmental impact and to gradually increase the use of renewable energy. ERIA produces annual research on energy outlook and energy saving potential in East Asia to look at the balance of energy best-mix based on each country’s policy and targets, as well as to predict the pattern of future energy consumption.

This is to inform you that ERIA invites Dr. Satoshi Konishi, Professor of Kyoto University to deliver a special lecture on an innovative renewable energy development opportunity in ASEAN to policymakers, private sectors, and NGOs on 16 May 2018. The lecture will highlight the unique opportunity of biomass renewable energy development in ASEAN.

In this lecture, Prof. Konishi will propose a new and innovative energy application based on the combination of biomass processing with the emissions trading market that could be far larger than the electricity market. Clean heat from renewable can be used for the conversion of waste biomass to charcoal. This process isolates the captured CO2 in the air by the photosynthesis from the environmental carbon cycle and stabilizes it as solid graphite and sells it as emission credits. This technology will eventually reverse the carbon balance disturbed by the fossil consumption and return it for sustainable state without compromising economic development.

Short Bio of the Lecturer: Dr Satoshi Konishi is a Professor at Institute of Advanced Energy, Kyoto University. Prof. Konishi is an esteemed energy scientist with 40 years of academic and scientific career, and he is a former board member of Atomic Energy Society of Japan. His research interest includes energy system analysis and sustainability. He is also one of the founders and the first Director of Institute of Sustainable Science, Kyoto University.
