Disability: Fostering Innovation, Awareness and Social Impact in the ASEAN Region

Completed

It is estimated that one in every six people in Asia and the Pacific live with disability, or 690 million people throughout the Asia– Pacific region. These include individuals with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, cognitive or developmental disabilities, and psychosocial disabilities. Persons living with disability face many obstacles in accessing education, decent work, social protection services, and legal support. While there are notable differences across the ASEAN region, countries may face challenges such as inadequate legislation, unequal employment, and inadequate physical access or adapted services. In this context, significant innovation is emerging in terms of nonprofit, private and public sector action. Also, technology offers new opportunities to foster the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

ERIA in partnership with Impact46 and Sasin School of Management holds this event, aims at disseminating good practices, raising raise awareness, and fostering partnerships among key stakeholders in this sector. The purpose of the event is to present and discuss the 3 key reports recently published by ERIA on the topic of disability in the ASEAN region. Based on the findings of such reports, focus is on 3 key topics:

  1. Inclusive education and how to overcome barriers for students with disabilities.
  2. Social enterprises and disability, and the role that NGOs, SEs, and philanthropy can play in fostering inclusion.
  3. Technology and disability, with a focus on opportunities and challenges brought about by digitalisation, tech and tech jobs.

The event will bring together a broad array of participants interested in advancing the inclusion of people with disabilities in Thailand and beyond. Participants will include social workers, students, academics, representatives from corporate CSR/HR depts, government departments, NGOs/social enterprises, Embassies, and multi-lateral and bi-lateral agencies.
