ERIA - GECF Joint Workshop 2019
Energy and Natural Gas Outlooks: ASEAN and East Asia Focus

The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) will hold a joint workshop on ‘Energy and Natural Gas Outlooks: ASEAN and East Asia Focus’ on Tuesday, 23 July 2019.

Robust economic growth in the East Asia Summit (EAS) region have significantly increased energy demand by almost double for both primary and final energy demand (2015-2040). The increasing energy demand posted threat on energy security (supply as well as infrastructure investment) in the EAS region. The region has also seen the fast-growing gas demand for the power generation, transportation, residential, and commercial sector. ERIA’s Energy Outlook and Saving Potential 2019 projected that gas demand in EAS grows at an average rate of 2.2% per annum (2015-2040), while gas demand in ASEAN grows at an average rate of 3.2% per annum (2015-2040). The growing demand of natural gas in the EAS region has many implications for the energy mix, investment, as well as CO2 emission for the climate change.

An expanded demand in natural gas is expected in ASEAN and East Asia region, which will lead to increases in the fuel costs in the power generation sector, as it mostly substitutes cheap coal. However, this could be partly offset by a reduction in construction costs since natural gas-fired power plants have lower capital costs. Other sectors (transport, residential, and commercial sectors) will see significant benefits in fuel costs as natural gas could be cheaper than oil products. A reduction in carbon emission is also expected in all sectors. To maximise the demand potential, various policies are required, such as clear and coherent policies on the promotion of natural gas use, economic competitiveness of natural gas, support for developing the supply infrastructure, and institutional and capacity building. Notably, the future growth and the promotion of natural gas use will need to focus on the natural gas supply chain based on the size of demand, main users of natural gas, technical constraints, geographical constraints, as well as available existing transport infrastructure.

Thus, this is a unique opportunity to hear the perspective from GECF and ERIA regarding their study and analysis of natural gas supply and uses for the current and future prospects.
