Capacity Building Seminar 2013 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar (RCEP, SME, Competition Law, Consumer Protection, IPR)

The three-day Capacity Building seminar in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar was held at Thingaha Hotel Nay Pyi Taw on November 28-30, 2013. The seminar focused on RCEP, SME, Competition Law, Consumer Protection, IPR ("Overcoming Challenges Ahead: Myanmar ASEAN Chair 2014, AEC and Beyond 2015"), together with the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development (MNPED), Myanmar and supported by Bangkok Research Center (BRC) JETRO, Bangkok, JETRO Yangon and Yangon Institute of Economics, Myanmar.

More than 200 participants from various government agencies and private sectors attended the seminar. H.E Daw Lei Lei Thein, Deputy Minister of National Planning and Economic Development (MNPED) and Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimura, Executive Director, ERIA was welcomed the participants.

Speakers and moderator for RCEP were Dr. Hank Lim, Chairperson of ERIA Academic Advisory Council (AAC), Prof. Chang Jae Lee, Senior Research Fellow, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), South Korea; Dr. Titik Anas, Economist, Center of Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Indonesia, Mr. Yoshifumi Fukunaga, Senior Policy Coordinator, ERIA, Mr. Masao Suematsu, COO and Executive Vice President, DENSO International Asia Co. Ltd, Thailand. Other speakers from Myanmar are Daw Khin Khin Nwe, Joint Secretary General, Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), Daw Than Than Lin, SEOM leader of Myanmar.

Speakers and moderator for SME on the second day were Mr. Antonio Fanelli, Deputy Head, Private Sector Development, OECD, Ms. Anita Richter, Policy Analyst, OECD, Dr. Sothea Oum, Economist, ERIA and Dr. Nu Nu Lwin, Visiting Research Fellow, The Asia Center, Seoul National University, South Korea. Dr. Ei Shweshin Tun, Ministry of Industry and Daw Khin Thida Nyein, Lecturer, Departement of Economics, Yangon Institute of Economics.

Speakers and moderator for Competition Law and Consumer Protection were Dr. Cassey Lee, Senior Lecturer, University of Wollongong, Australia, Dr. Vince Eng Teong See, LLB (Hons), Associate Fellow UMCoRS, Malaysia, Dr. Michael Schaper, Deputy Chairperson, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Australia, Mr. Shimpei Yamamoto, Managing Director for Research Affairs, ERIA, Dr. Aye Thiri Wai, Deputy Director, Ministry of Science and Technology, Myanmar and Mr. Hiroshi Kato, Professor, Nihon University, Japan.
